Enjoying the stunning sunset over North Wales from Little Eye

Fate placed me on the wirral on a gloriously clear January afternoon. After checking the weather, tides (over and over again) and golden hour time, I decided to head over to West Kirby for the evening. I had wanted to head out to Hilbre Island for quite some time and luckily on this day the tides lined up perfectly.

With sunset being around 5pm and the cut off time to return to West Kirby being 9pm This seemed like the perfect opportunity for a walk on the beach. Ignoring the fact that I hate sand, there really couldn’t have been a better late afternoon walk.

As I set off at low tide from the shoreline I was passed by one of the few people I saw all evening, the local rangers heading out to Hilbre Island. They left an amazing track into the distance, heading to Little Eye which is the first of the 3 islands.

The winter sky looked stunning reflecting in the shallow water of the estuary as golden hour approached. Couldn’t do anything other than stop for some amazing pictures out over the sands into the Irish Sea.

Once I reached Little Eye I took the opportunity for a short break and a snack before sending my DJI Mavic 2 Pro up to catch the sunset over the Dee Estuary. The sunset didn’t disappoint with amazing deep oranges and reds with some deep purples later on during blue hour.

I could have stayed out all night for the stars but it was soon time to head back to West Kirby. Stopping on the way back to capture some shots of Little Eye and the Welsh mountains as the light faded.
